Patakha Guddi Lyrics Translation and Meaning

From music maestro A.R Rahman, comes his latest score for "Highway", Imtiaz Ali's new film starring one-film old Alia Bhatt and a highly underrated leading man, Randeep Hooda. The album comes on the back of Rahman's score for "Raanjhana", Tamil superstar Dhanush's Hindi film debut. Post Raanjhana, Rahman has scored for Mani Ratnam's disappointing "Kadal" and Bharat Bala's "Mariyan", which had a few sensational tunes.

Ali, in whose movies road travel has always played a key role (remember "Ye Ishq Haaye" from Jab We Met or "Nadaan Parindey" and "Phir Se Ud Chala" from Rockstar), dedicates a whole movie to life on the highway and teams up with Rahman and wordsmith Irshad Kamil again post "Rockstar".

The upshoot are a few glorious songs and a few that take time to grow on you with repeat hearing (a cliche now for Rahman compositions).

The movie is essentially a journey of a girl who simply wants to be free and 'find' her freedom, and the opening song, the rather curiously named, 'Patakha Guddi', is a cracker of a composition, wonderfully capturing the free, untamed spirit of a young girl.

Lyricist Kamil excels with wordplay here to express the young heroine's innocence, purity and firecracker attitude. He intersperses this with lines having Sufi connotations, putting forth beautiful thoughts about the young girl being a destiny's child, with the Lord always looking out for this bundle of innocence and exuberance.

Sung with gutso by Sultana and Jyoti Nooran, their earthy voices literally making you smell the soil in the fields in and around the highways where this song has been shot, "Patakha Guddi" is beautiful music with rich wordplay!

Here are the full lyrics:

Mitthe paan di gilauri
Lattha suit da Lahori
Fatte maar di billori
Jugni mel mel ke, kood faand ke
Chak chakaute jaave

Maula tera maali,
O hariyaali jungle waali,
Tu de har gaali pe taali,
Uski kadam kadam rakhwaali,
Ainweyi lok-laaj ki soojh soch ki
kyun hai aafat daali
Tu le naam rab da, naam saai ka
Ali Ali Ali Ali

Sharf khuda ka, zarf khuda ka,
Ali Ali Ali Ali
Ali ho, Ali ho, Chali o re chali, chali, chali
Ali Ali, teri gali, wo to chali,
Ali Ali, teri gali, chali o..

O Jugni O, patakha guddi O,
Nashe mein ud jaaye re haaye re
Sajje khabbe dhabbe killi ho,

Maine to tere tere utte chhaddiyaan doreyaan,

Tu to paak rab da baanka bachha
Raj dulara tu hi,
paak rab da baanka bachha
Uska pyaara tu hi
Maalik ne jo chinta di to, door karega wo hi

Naam Ali ka le ke tu to, naach le gali gali
Le naam Ali Ali, Ali ho, Ali ho,
Tu le naam rab da, naam saai ka,
Ali Ali Ali Ali

Jugni rukh pippal da hoi,
Jis nu pooje ta har koi,
Jisdi fasal kisi na boyi
Ghar bhi rakh sake na koi.

Rasta naap rahi marjaani,
Patthi baarish da hai paani,
Jab nazdeek jahaan de aani,
Jugni maili si ho jaani..

Tu le naam rab da Ali Ali,
Chal khale rann chali,
Naam rab da Ali Ali,
Har darwaaja Ali,

Saayin re... Sai Re..
Maine to tere tere, utte chhaddiyan doriyaan..

  1. Here's the meaning - This has been picked from Harnidh Kaur's blog.

    Mitthe paan di gilauri,
    Lathha suit da Lahori,
    Fatte maardi billori,
Jugni mel mel ke, kood faand ke,
    Chakk chakaute jaave..
    (A piece of sweet paan
A metre of a Lahori suits’ cloth
    Running around like a kitten,
The firefly is flying from person to person,
and she’s flitting around the place.
(Basically she’s having a lot of fun))
    Maula tera maali,
    O hariyaali jungle waali,
Tu de har gaali pe taali,
    Uski kadam kadam rakhwaali,
Ainweyi lok-laaj ki soojh soch ki
    kyun hai aafat daali
Tu le naam rab da, naam saai ka
    Ali Ali Ali Ali
(God is your gardener, or caretaker
And you are untameable, like the jungle
You just brush off everything negative
Because you have god’s protection on you.
Why do you even bother thinking about the society and what it believes?
Just remember the protection you have.)
Sharf khuda ka, zarf khuda ka,
    Ali Ali Ali Ali
Ali ho, Ali ho, Chali o re chali, chali, chali
Ali Ali, teri gali, wo to chali,
Ali Ali, teri gali, chali o..
(Honour of God, Wisdom of God,
She comes to your lane, and puts herself in your hands, Lord.)
    O Jugni O, patakha guddi O,
Nashe mein ud jaaye re haaye re
    Sajje khabbe dhabbe killi ho,
    (She’s a firefly, she’s like a fiery kite,
    She flies, intoxicated,
    All over the place.)
Maine to tere tere utte chhaddiyaan doreyaan,
Tu to paak rab da baanka bachha
    Raj dulara tu hi,
    paak rab da baanka bachha
    Uska pyaara tu hi
Maalik ne jo chinta di to, door karega wo hi
(I have left all the strings I tied you by. The lord will protect you better than I can.
You are a fearless child of God,
    His favorite child.
    Fearless child of God,
Whatever struggles he puts your way, he’ll take them away too.)
Naam Ali ka le ke tu to, naach le gali gali
Le naam Ali Ali, Ali ho, Ali ho,
Tu le naam rab da, naam saai ka,
    Ali Ali Ali Ali
(Chant the name of the lord, and fearlessly dance in streets.)
    Jugni rukh pippal da hoi,
Jis nu pooje ta har koi,
    Jisdi fasal kisi na boyi
Ghar bhi rakh sake na koi..
(Jugni has become the very soul of a peepal tree,
    and everyone worships her,
And yet no one has managed to make her grow roots,
and no one can keep her at home and subdue her.)
    Rasta naap rahi marjaani,
    Patthi baarish da hai paani,
    Jab nazdeek jahaan de aani,
    Jugni maili si ho jaani..
    (The damned girl keeps moving
And she’s like the water of the first rain
When she comes near the real world,
She’ll lose her innocence and beauty.)
Tu le naam rab da Ali Ali,
    jhall khaleran chali,
    Naam rab da Ali Ali,
    Har darwaaja Ali,
(She manages to create madness and survive. The lord protects her.)
